Garden Visitors - the Crested Pigeon

Journal #8, page 4, Crested Pigeon, Ocyphaps lophotes
The whole eye appears to be bigger than it really is, thanks to a patch of bare red skin. This gives the bird a cartoon-like look and a range of interesting expressions.

Tertial left wing feather.

  1. Your work is very beautiful and inspiring! I found your blog through "Sketching in Nature". I myself am rather a beginner and currently doing small sketchbooks with bird eggs, nests and birds with polychromos pencils. I would like to try some in watercolors too. Do you have any good tips (books you can recommend) to improve my bird drawings/paintings? Thanks so much,
    Suzanne

    1. Hello Suzanne, thank you for your kind comment, a book I would certainly recommend you is 'Drawing Birds' by John Busby, it is not a step by step book but it gives much more I think. Another useful resource is the following: http://www.johnmuirlaws.com/
I hope that will help, and I hope to see your works soon!

    2. Thank you Matteo for your reply: I own John Busby's book and think that it is a very good one; but I didn't know John Muir Laws's site and was very glad to discover it. Maybe one day I'll post some ob my birds to my flickr album.... Meanwhile I am looking forward to the beautiful work you'll post!

  4. Great studies of a striking bird as usual, Matteo. You're so good at painting feathers. They look so metallic and real.

  6. Matteo your work just keeps me in awe. Your meticulous drawing skills are enviable. I'm sure you must have shown the Audubon Society your work; and they must have flipped. If you haven't, do it.

  9. Hello Matteo
Your works are beautiful, as usual. I´d like to visit your blog more often but I'm working on the edition of a new issue of the free online magazine of the AEAN, 'Bocetos'. I invite you to collaborate with an article.
    Regards

  11. This is a really lovely piece. I love the colours captured in the feathers, they really do look like they are catching and reflecting the light.
